Farmers Fed uses WorkChoice laws

Date: 16 November 2007

Paul Howes

Paul Howes

More than 100,000 workers in the Australian pastoral industry could have their wages cut because of complications caused by the WorkChoice laws, and the Howard Government's Australian Fair Pay Commission

" The National Farmers Federation (NFF) is trying to use bureaucratic foul-ups and discrepancies created by the Howard Government's Fair Pay Commission to shave hard earned dollars off our members.

" At the start of October the AWU distributed to shearers the latest pay rate sheet and called on members to ensure all their work mates insisted on these rates," Paul Howes, Acting National Secretary of the AWU said.

Two Commissions issue different pay rates

" We pointed out to our members that because of bureaucratic blundering, created solely by John Howard's unfair WorkChoice laws, two different government organisations ( the Industrial Relations Commission and the Fair Pay Commission) now increase Pastoral Industry wages.

" They use the same increase but a different method for calculation - the result is slightly different pay rates.

Farmers Fed playing off the two Commissions

" Unfortunately the NFF is playing off the two different Commissions. And they tell their members to pay the lowest pay offered by the two government organisations.

" It is unfair for our members in the Pastoral Industry to be paid different rates depending on whether the Fair Pay Commission or the Industrial Relations Commission calculated the increase," Paul Howes said.

AWU distributes recommended standard rate to fix up Gvt's mess

" As each Commission claims to produce only " minimum rates" it is the higher minimum rate that should be used."

Because of this bureaucratic mess the AWU distributed a recommended standardised rates .

" We believe that no employer should pay less than this standard - regardless of which Commission decision they claim to be bound by," Paul Howes said.

End the nightmare by voting for an end to WorkChoice laws

" All Australians - including rural and regional voters - can help end this nightmare mess by voting later this month for the end of the harsh, ugly WorkChoice laws.

" The end of the Howard Government and the election of a Rudd Labor Government will help return sanity and decency to our workplaces."
