Beaconsfield mine safetyDate: 18 December 2007
The AWU believes the new Beaconsfield mine management is much more " Management it seems now understand the value the union can add to effective OHS programs, " Paul Howes, AWU National Secretary said today. " Statistically it appears that a seismic event bigger than the one of April 2006 can be expected every couple of years. This is obviously a worry to us," Paul Howes said. Union in best position to monitor OHS" The AWU believes that healthy skepticism about OHS by workers is a good thing and something that should be encouraged; actually encouraging workforce anxiety about OHS standards is a must. The union is in the best position to tap into that," Paul Howes said.Serious shortcomings exist in workplace safety act" We strongly encourage workers to talk to both the union and management about any concerns they may have about OHS standards, even any weak signals which might predict trouble." The AWU is still trying to persuade the Tasmanian Minister, Steve Kons, and his Department that they have serious short comings in the Workplace Health and Safety Act as it relates to the mining industry.
" There needs to be changes made to allow inspectors to play a more pro-active and interventionist role in mine safety. This is crucial to the safety of miners at all Tasmanian mines. " The AWU is strongly pushing for other mines to adopt genuine safety case standards delivering quality OHS processes and systems."
