Fixing Sydney, Transport & Planning

Date: 02 October 2008

The public transport woes of Sydney are bandied about by the media, politicians and public - but is a solution in sight?

Now is the time to seriously examine infrastructure, transport and planning of Sydney particularly given the historic underinvestment by successive state governments and the current capacity constraints being experienced by the transport system.

The NSW Fabian Society invites you to examine what Sydney, and in particular the often forgotten western suburbs transport needs will be in the future, and what some of the costs will be for the tax payer to get a workable solution to public transport in Sydney.

Michael Easson (Chairman of Leighton Contractors' Western FastRail and formerly Secretary of the Labor Council), Dr Garry Glazebrook (academic) and Joe Hildebrand (Daily Telegraph Journalist) discuss these questions and others at Gleebooks.

The Moderator for the seminar is Geoff Gallop

When: 3.00pm Saturday 18 October 2008.

Where: Gleebooks - 49 Glebe Point Road, Glebe.

Cost: Seminar cost - Non-Fabians $10. Members are $5 - please show your current membership card to obtain discounted entry.

Contact: Bookings essential - book at or on 9660 2333.

Media queries please contact Simon O'Hara, Secretary, NSW Fabians on 0400 188815.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Michael Easson, is Chairman of Leighton Contractors' Western FastRail consortium and is executive Chairman of a property funds management business; he has written a paper in a private capacity for discussion at the NSW Fabian Society seminar on 'Fixing Sydney: Transport and Planning". In the past 20 years he has served on the boards of most of Sydney's largest rail, light rail and roads businesses, including the State Rail Authority, Metro Transport Sydney (light rail), Macquarie Infrastructure Group, Sydney Roads Group and Leighton Contractors' Western Fast Rail. Since leaving the Labor Council in 1994, Mr Easson has worked in the private sector; for several years he was an Adjunct Professor in the Centre for Corporate Change at the AGSM at the University of NSW. For 17 years Mr Easson worked with the Labor Council of NSW, including as Secretary from 1989 to 1994. He is a past Secretary of the NSW Fabian Society in the 1980's.

Dr Garry Glazebrook, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building, University of Technology Sydney. Dr Glazebrook is an expert in transport planning and a well known author and advocate for better planning for the needs of residents and commuters in North-west and Western Sydney. He teaches at the post-graduate level in urban planning and property.

Joe Hildebrand is a political reporter and columnist with The Daily Telegraph. He originally comes from Melbourne, a city whose transport infrastructure differs significantly from Sydney's in that it has one. He has been covering political and transport issues in NSW for several years and is cautiously pessimistic they will ever be resolved.

Hon Professor Geoff Gallop was premier of Western Australia from 2001 to 2006. In 1994 Geoff was elected Deputy Leader of the WA State Parliamentary Labor Party. Geoff was a minister in the Lawrence Labor government from 1990 to 1993.

Geoff is a Rhodes Scholar who remains close friends with the former Labour Prime Minister of Great Britain, Tony Blair and was once an organiser for the Missos.
