Solidarity with Indian hotel workersDate: 29 November 2008
On behalf of the more than 10 million workers in the food, agricultural, hotel and tourism sectors it represents, the IUF expresses its deep sorrow at the violence that took place in Mumbai, India, on November 26, 2008. Terrorist attacks were primarily directed at luxury hotels and other popular tourist sites. We express our sincere condolences to all individuals and families that have suffered or are suffering as a result of these barbaric acts. We also would like to express our solidarity with all those workers in hotels and other tourist sites that are victims of terrorism. They suffer from the violence of terrorism and they may suffer also in their job security and working conditions as terrorism affects tourism. We call upon employers to quickly open a dialogue with trade union at all levels to discuss ways and means to safeguard jobs in regions affected by terrorism and to involve hotel staff in the drawing up and implementing of measures to prevent attacks and violence. IUF-affiliated trade unions in the hotel sector express their strong solidarity and support to the IUF-affiliated Hotel Employees Federation of India (HEFOI) whose members in Indian hotels have been deeply affected by the Mumbai attacks.
