Howes elected new ACTU Vice-Pres

Date: 10 December 2008

For the first time in nearly a quarter of a century the Australian Workers' Union has been elected to a leadership position on the executive of the ACTU.

During the ACTU Executive meeting this week the AWU National Secretary, Paul Howes, was elected to the position of ACTU Vice-President.

" As the leader of Australia's biggest blue-collar union it is indeed an honour to be elected to this post working closely with ACTU President, Sharan Burrow and ACTU Secretary, Jeff Lawrence," Paul Howes said.

Paul Howes joins Australian Services Union's, Assistant National Secretary, Linda White; Australian Education Union Federal Secretary Susan Hopgood; CFMEU National Secretary John Sutton and Kathy Jackson from the Health Services Union as ACTU Vice Presidents.

Joe de Bruyn, National Secretary of the SDA is the ACTU Senior Vice President.
