AWU on Vic Transport PlanDate: 10 December 2008
AWU Victoria commented today on the announcement by the Mr Brumby's Government that additional "rolling stock" will be provided by way of further bus, train and tram services in the State of Victoria.
Mr Melhem said "this will infuse more jobs into the current frail manufacturing industry and instil much needed confidence in the public transport services currently being provided in both metropolitan and regional Victoria. While the promised release of $38 billion for this Plan has been the brunt of some negativity in the press the AWU supports the proposals as an important injection of job-creating funds for the State. Mr Melhem said "the AWU stands firm in its view that this proactive approach from the Government is the best way forward if the transport system is to be improved in the State. " Victoria's manufacturing industry and the State economy in general will be vastly enhanced by this initiative," Mr Melhem said. Read earlier report
