AWU National Conference

Date: 14 January 2009

Australia's oldest union and our biggest blue-collar union will hold its national conference in the first week of February in the Surfers' Paradise Room at Conrad Jupiter's on the Gold Coast.

national-conference09-logo "More than 300 union members and observers will attend the Australian Workers' Union conference to discuss how we best react over the coming years to issues like jobs and the global financial crisis," Paul Howes, AWU National Secretary, said today.

The AWU National Secretary, Paul Howes, will make a major speech at the conference about the priorities for the Australian Workers' Union - especially protecting jobs in the face of the global financial crisis - on the first official day of the conference in Monday February 2, 2009.

Later in the day the National Secretary will appear by video-conference link before a Senate Inquiry, sitting in Canberra, looking into key climate change issues as they hit AWU members working in the fuel and energy industries.

Here are some of the key speakers at the conference:

  • Business Council of Australia President - Greg Gailey on Tuesday February 3
  • ACTU National Secretary, Jeff Lawrence, on Wednesday February 4
  • Cardinal George Pell, Wednesday February 4
  • Indigenous leader, Warren Mundine, Tuesday February 3
  • Minister for Resources, Martin Ferguson, Sunday February 1
  • Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities, Bill Shorten, Sunday February 1
