Cardinal Pell speaks to AWU

The Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, His Eminence Cardinal George Pell will be the key note speaker at the AWU national conference tomorrow ( Wednesday February 4, 2009).

CardinalCardinal Pell will speak at 11.45 am on Wednesday February 4 to the more than 300 AWU delegates and observers on the second last day of the AWU National Conference.

The Pope, trade unions and the GFC

Last week Pope Benedict XVI met with the leaders of the Italian trade union movement and clearly stated that unions will play an important role in resolving the current global economic crisis.


" The great challenge and the great opportunity posed by today's worrisome economic crisis is to find a new synthesis between the common good and the market; between capital and labour.

" And in this regard union organizations can make a significant contribution," the Catholic News Service quotes the Pope as telling Italian unions.

ACTU Secretary, Jeff Lawrence

Earlier on Wednesday, at 10 am, the ACTU Secretary, Jeff Lawrence will be speaking about the challenges confronting the union movement, and the need for a comprehensive plan for the global financial crisis, jobs and unions.
