CPSU welcomes stimulus packageDate: 03 February 2009
Australia's largest public sector union has today welcomed the Federal Government's $42 billion package aimed at stimulating the economy and supporting Australian jobs. The Community and Public Sector Union said today's significant stimulus package was an acknowledgement that the public sector has a central role to play in tackling the economic crisis Australia now faces. Public sector workers are expected to play an important role under the Government¹s plan, distributing about $12.7 billion worth of tax bonuses and one off payments to low and middle-income households, farmers, single-income families and students. CPSU National Secretary, Stephen Jones said today's announcement underscored the need to ensure the public sector was properly funded and resourced to meet the challenges that now lie ahead. "Public servants welcome the Federal Government's decision today to put the public sector at the frontline of providing support Australians in need and combating the economic crisis," Mr Jones said. "Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has today acknowledged that economic challenges are significant and will demand a ¹feat of nation organisation and planning¹ of the likes we have not seen in this country since the 1940's. "Public sector workers have heard Mr Rudd's message and stand ready to help meet the economic challenges Australia faces but the Federal Government has a responsibility to ensure public servants are armed with the funding and resources needed," he said.
