Cessnock prison privatisation offDate: 02 May 2009
Corrective Service Minister John Robertson announced that Cessnock jail would not be privatised. Privatisation of prisoner transport and court facilities would be put on hold. The Government still plans to privatise Parklea jail.
Earlier today the NSW ALP Administrative Committee, which was being asked to turn ALP policy against privatisation on its head, rebuffed the Minister and decided not to deal with the issue. There is no doubt the about-face was because of the "Stop the Cell-Off" campaign which has been gathering support among unions and the community generally. The fight is not over. We now need to concentrate our efforts to save Parklea from being privatised and make sure the transport and court proposals do not resurface. We still have a big fight on our hands.
