AWU cheers Qantas unions jobs win

Date: 11 May 2009

The AWU welcomes the move by Qantas to move maintenance work back from The Philippines to Brisbane - securing the jobs of between 400 and 500 Queenslanders.

Qantas a330 " Our union has joined with the other unions representing this important skilled workforce to ensure that the maintenance and servicing of the A330 passenger aircraft is done in the hangars in Brisbane," Paul Howes, AWU National Secretary said.

AWU wants to keep these good jobs in Brisbane

" The potential was for many of these jobs to be lost in coming years as the 767 fleet was phased out - but the union movement stepped up and talked with the company management to protect these strategic jobs.

" Today's decision is a direct result of drawn out negotiations for a new Qantas unions collective agreement completed in April this year.

Brisbane becomes world-leading aviation industry centre

" This decision will continue to ensure that Brisbane evolves as a world-leading aviation industry centre and protects and creates good local skilled aviation jobs," Paul Howes said

"The agreement we have negotiated offers to not only protect 400 to 500 jobs, but will create more jobs and investment in upskilling of the workforce - despite the global economic doom.

Unions can deliver job security

" I want to congratulate our union's members who showed that we can be stronger together in times of economic adversity.

" Unions can deliver more job security opportunities by developing constructive working relationships with management," Paul Howes said.

Retain skilled jobs in tough economic times and prepare for economic revival

" If we are to protect our skills base and prepare for the inevitable future economic upswing unions and employers should do all they can together to retain good skilled jobs and staff in tough economic times."

Paul Howes praised Qantas for agreeing to a more open process to discussing how we can keep jobs from going offshore.

"Together we will continue to look for alternatives to out-sourcing work and off- shoring Qantas aircraft," Paul Howes said.
