TWU calls for funds for shot driverDate: 26 June 2009
The Transport Workers Union will be asking members and people in the industry to donate money to the family of a truck driver killed after being shot as he was driving his truck in Milperra this morning. TWU NSW Secretary, Wayne Forno, said the Canberra man was an owner-driver working for TNT with more than 30 years behind the wheel. "Last night's incident was just a total tragedy with a man who was just doing his job killed heading down the road," Mr Forno said. "Being a long-distance driver is one of the toughest jobs around and there are far too many deaths in our industry as it is, but this morning's act just makes me feel outraged. We have since had a number of calls from TWU members and members of the public asking if we can help the family in anyway. "Following discussions with the driver's workmates, including the TWU delegate at his yard, we are asking anyone who wants to help the family to contact the TWU and we will pass any funds to the man's employer to go to the family. "This is one time like this the whole industry, including employers and clients, need to stand together and assist," Mr Forno said. Seth Tenkate 0408 463 199. TWU NSW Secretary Wayne Forno and TWU Federal Secretary, Tony Sheldon are available for comment.
