Nth Coast nurse protests

Date: 07 December 2009

Protest rallies on Wednesday at four centres. Join the north coast nurses in their fight for safe patient care.

It is time for north coast residents to take a stand against cuts to their health services by attending four protest rallies being held on the north coast on Wednesday, the NSW Nurses Association (NSWNA) said today.

NSWNA members across the North Coast Area Health Service will hold rallies next Wednesday, 9 December, at;

  • Lismore Hospital,
  • Coffs Harbour Health Campus,
  • Port Macquarie Hospital and
  • Tweed Heads Hospital,
The rallies have been called to protest against severe budget cuts across the health service.

These budget cuts have resulted in the loss of hundreds of nursing and allied health positions and very little, if any, new staff being recruited.

This has caused:

  • a big reduction in community health services;
  • overcrowding and increased waiting times in local Emergency Departments;
  • a reduction in hospital bed numbers across the region; and
  • an increased need for patients to travel to gain essential treatment.

Rally Details

Date: Wednesday the 9th of December 2009.

Time: 12.00noon - 1.00pm.

Venues: Outside the Hospitals

  • Lismore Hospital;

  • Coffs Harbour Health Campus;

  • Port Macquarie Hospital; and

  • Tweed Heads Hospital.

Everyone is invited to attend. Off duty nurses will be travelling from other centres on the north coast to join the four rallies.

NSWNA general secretary, Brett Holmes, said all members of the community are strongly encouraged to join the nurses on Wednesday and fight for safe patient care on the north coast.

"Local nurses have taken a strong stand over many months against the cut backs on the north coast.

" However, they also need the support of the wider community if their campaign against these severe health service cuts is to be successful.

"I ask every north coast resident to try and make time to attend one of the rallies. If they cannot get to a rally they can contact their local State member of parliament and express their support for the nurses' campaign.

"There is a lot at stake and the entire north coast community has an interest in the matter," Mr Holmes said.

More detail on the extent of the health service cuts in the North Coast Area Health Service will be provided at Wednesday's rallies.
