No Winners from 2nd Rate SafetyDate: 11 December 2009
A disturbing thing will happen today. Federal and state Labor government ministers will agree to weaken key aspects of workplace safety law. It will be a sad day for working people and an ignominious day for the political wing of the labour movement. When the federal and state governments agreed to create national workplace safety standards, unions thought it would be a worthwhile reform. We thought we had a firm commitment that the highest standards from every state would apply and the tide would rise for working people everywhere. What we're left with falls well short of the Federal Government's promise. For the first time since WWII, workers in NSW will lose the right to take independent court action when workplace safety is breached. Read the rest here...
