Star City staff kick off campaignDate: 08 March 2010
Star City staff today kick off a campaign to win public support for a fair pay offer for workers during this afternoon's A-League semi-final between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory. Star City is a sponsor of Sydney FC. The launch of the campaign has been marked by an ad played on Fox Sports. LHMU NSW Branch Secretary Mark Boyd says the ad is timed to coincide with the game to get support from Sydney FC fans who know Star City as the 'home away from home' for the team.
The ad shows the casino continues to do well. "The casino is planning to spend $575 million on renovating the site, its top executives are being paid more than $2.6 million and its last quarter revenue is up 11.6%," Mark says. "And yet it is only offering workers a 2% pay rise in the first year while attacking their conditions." Star City staff in gaming, security, food and beverage, public area, and entertainment are also going on strike today. This marks the sixth lot of industrial action that workers have taken since the start of this year. "Star City management needs to listen to its staff," Mark says. "Staff will be asking punters to sign a petition to Casino CEO Larry Mullin asking him to come to the table and negotiate a fair offer for workers." Staff have been negotiating with Star City for a new enterprise agreement for more than eight months. "Staff have said they will continue to take strike action as long as casino management refuses to make a fair wage offer."
