Forest union gets US union supportDate: 10 April 2010
Over the first quarter of 2010 the Union has been building on work in Tumut, begun in 2009, providing workers at the Visy Pulp Mill with information about the Union and their rights to join a Union under the new Fair Work laws. Many of these workers are on AWA's where pay and conditions fall below established Australian pulp and paper industry standards. A number of visits to Tumut by senior Pulp and Paper District officials have allowed Visy Tumut workers insight into both the state of their industry and the advantages of joining the Union. Member numbers at Visy have grown to a point where a decision has been made in consultation with workers to re-activate the Tumut CFMEU PPW Sub-Branch. The sub branch will be launched in May this year and will, provide a voice for our members and an avenue for improved representation rights and bargaining position. The Union has received a letter from the United Steel Workers Union (USW) in the United State of America expressing their support for the recrutiment campaign at Tumut. The USW represents 70 workers at a Pratt Group carton and bax p[lant in Grand Rapids, Michigan who are all members of their Union. Click on this link to view the letter.
