Back a Jockey on Cup DayDate: 29 October 2010
Jockeys have the most dangerous job, with the highest risk of death, of any workers in Australia. Jockeys' work is also physically punishing and financially insecure. Racing is a rich industry - generating $5 billion a year nationwide. Yet jockeys who are injured, with cases of quadriplegia and severe brain injury tragically regular, are often left financially destitute. This Melbourne Cup, unions are asking all workers to back jockeys' call for better support from State Governments, who rake in hundreds of millions in tax revenue from racing. Email your Racing Minister here , to tell your State Government to fund the National Jockeys Trust to support injured jockeys. And if you pick a winner on Cup Day, think about putting a bit of your windfall into the Trust with a tax-deductable online donation.
