40,000 say- “hands off picnic day"

Date: 01 December 2000

The biggest Union Picnic day in the world is on Monday December 4 at Australia's Wonderland- the CFMEU Construction Division's Annual Picnic Day.

Media are invited to come and witness the community support for a 100 year old tradition of working people from the same industry enjoying a day off together.

Federal Workplace Relations Minister Peter Reith has introduced legislation into Federal Parliament to end union picnic days, currently a provision in many awards.

Reith says Union Picnic Day is an anachronism our brave new economy no longer needs.

But tens of thousands of Sydneysiders will be voting with their feet and demonstrating the continuing relevance of this workers institution.

At noon Monday at Wonderland hundreds of primary school children, sons and daughters of building workers, will hold a banner aloft proclaiming "Hands off Union Picnic Day"
